  1. You have taken a lot of efforts to arrive at the figures. I’m sure, it’ll be useful. At a glance, I see, beta reading charges can be eliminated. For a 50,000 words, that alone comes to Rs.25,000.00 (by your calculation).

I feel, as the cover is the first point of contact, going for a better cover is preferred, and it costs something around 7,500.00 to 12,500.00. Your cost of 40 to 60 for books, if printed bulk (assuming a min. qty of 500 Nos.) For a first time writer selling it will be a big task. If the writer opts for a package, it will be nothing around 80 to 1.00 lakh. If writer decides to go only for edit, cover design, and interior design for e book etc., it will come to 70,000.00 + other charges like ISBN etc. Either way – it’ll be 0.80 lakh min.

My understanding on the publishing cost – If it is on print on demand, publisher fix the MRP as 120 (as you said), but the royalty the writer get is around Rs.10.00 per book. If done through the publisher’s website, writer gets around 60.00 (deductions not included)

royalty will be For e book, if done directly (assuming Rs.100.00 for the e book), the writer gets Rs.55.00 to 60.00, if dealt with amazon directly and (after data transfer charges, sales tax or IT deduction etc). If the same is done through a publisher, it’ll be something around 35.00 to 40 (after the expenses).

Publication cost – 0.75 lakhs (ISBN will be charged extra, if writer is not opting for a package by the publisher, if yw. Marketing cost – 0.25 lakhs. Value of time spent on writing the novel – min. 0.25

    Total: 1.50 lakhs (min)

Assuming the sale of books in this ratio:

    E book sales 80%
    Print book sales 20%

    e book through amazon/flipkart etc : 80%
e book through publisher website 20%

print book through amazon / flipkart etc. 80%
print book through publisher website 20%

approx. royalty for e book (directly) Rs.60.00
approx. royalty for e book (through pub) Rs.40.00

approx. royalty for print book (amazon) Rs.10.00
    approx. royalty for print book
    (through pub website) Rs.60.00

No. of books to be sold by the writer with two options to recover his investment of 1.50 lakhs.

    Direct through publisher

    e book 2000 3000
    print book 500 3000

This is my understanding. What you say?

  2. Wow, Mr. Murali’s reply, put together with the original post is a real eye opener. I’ll take this as a nudge to better my illustrator and in design skills so I can atleast cut out the design costs when I write and publish
